We have heard about lots of IT professionals saying about 3-2-1 rule of backup, and praised it as the Golden Rule when doing data backup. But what is 3-2-1 rule of backup?
3-2-1 Rule of Backup
Simply states that all important data should have 3 backup copies, stored in 2 different copies onsite and 1 copy offsite (preferably on the cloud).
Here is a simple breakdown practice of the 3-2-1 Rule of Backup
- Create 3 copies to ensure that no single event will wipe out all the data.
- 2 copies onsite this includes an internal drive plus external media (disk, tape, network, NAS, etc.)
- 1 copy offsite protects data against physical disasters like theft or fire. (e.g. backup in another data center or in the cloud)
The questions that IT professionals ask is what happens if data loss happens, and not when data loss happens. The faster that companies implement the 3-2-1 rule and establish a plan, the better equipped they’ll be to prevent an incident from escalating to a disaster.
