What is Bitlocker?
Bitlocker is an encryption program that encrypt your storage media and help in preventing unauthorized access to your data. It uses the AES encryption algorithm with a 128-bit or a 256-bit key which is very safe to lock your data. In EHDR, many clients reach us out regarding to their storage device encrypted and recovery key lost. Besides, there are also clients that don’t aware about drive encryption before device failure. It is because some of the PC or laptop originally enable the Bitlocker encryption, which user is not aware about it. Below are some direction from EHDR if you lost your recovery key.
Where can you find the Bitlocker recovery key if lost?

- Microsoft Account
Try to sign in to your Microsoft account to look for your recovery key. For those devices that support auto encryption, you will have higher chance to get the key from your account.
- Active Directory
Devices that signed Into an organization with a work or school email, you may try to seek for support from your company’s IT department. As a system administration, they have right to access Active Directory to look for all bitlocker recovery keys.
- Office 365 Account
Microsoft account and Office 365 account are coming with 2 different databases. If you can’t find your recovery in Microsoft account, try our your Office 365 account.
- USB Thumb Drive
Some company will save the recovery key into a thumb drive. You may seek for advice from your IT department.
