2TB Seagate HDD Hang While Connected to PC
Case description:
A customer contacted us to diagnose his 2TB Seagate ST2000LM007 2.5” external hard drive. It is a storage drive that he uses in his company. When he tries to access some information from the hard drive, the hard drive can still be detected by the computer, but it will hang and slow in accessing the data. He tried to restart the PC, but it remained the same. After several attempts, this drive became undetectable. Subsequently, there’s a slight clicking sound encountered while connected to the PC. Have sought advice from the IT department in his company. After the IT expert diagnose this HDD, they mentioned it is probably due to hardware failure and unable to recover through software level.
Action (Solution):
Our data recovery specialist checked through the hard drive, and it spins up successfully, and the clicking noise was confirmed. The drive was disconnected from recovery tools to prevent the health and platter condition of this drive deteriorate further. This is caused by the read/write heads being faulty and unable to access the data sectors properly. Based on the condition of the drive, with our specialist’s experiences, data recovery is still possible. After the confirmation with our client, we proceed with the recovery of the hard drive.
The Outcome
The platter is not damaged by the faulty read/write head. Our data recovery specialist managed to recover most of the data from this hard drive. We transferred the recovered data to a new external hard drive and he checked through all the data. The result of this recovery is positive.
Suggestion
If you have a faulty hard drive that encountered a clicking sound, it is best to disconnect it and approach a proper data recovery center in Singapore for an assessment. Please feel free to contact us if you require any data recovery services or backup solutions.
