Case description:

A customer contacted us to diagnose for his 2.5” 4TB Western Digital (WD) external hard drive - WD40NDZW-11A8JS1. The WD hard drive was used for data storage, it holds many working files, Images, and videos. Originally, he is uploading all saved data into his NAS. Unfortunately, this hard disk hangs and became undetectable. He tried to access the disk management to check the drive which it still detectable, but it doesn’t show up in the windows. He tried to reconnect the drive for a few times. Finally, the computer managed to detect this drive. But the name of this drive is not showing, only “Local Disk D” shown. Subsequently, when he tried to access the drives, the computer will hang.

Action (Solution):

Our Singapore EHDR’s data recovery specialist proceeded with the diagnosis. According to S.M.A.R.T., the health of this hard drive deteriorated. It causes by the damage read/write heads of this drive. Eventually, it hangs while our specialist tried to access user sectors. Luckily, the condition of the platter is remaining in a good condition, no damage found on platter surface which is better compared with the drive with platter damaged.

The Outcome

The data recovery was successful. We manage to access the data and recover the data from this hard drive. The total data was about 3.0TB plus and all extracted data was transferred into a new 4TB external hard drive for our customer. He goes through all the recovered data and happy with the result, all the data linkage in excel is still working.

Suggestion
