Initial Cause of Data Loss

A customer contacted us to diagnose her 4TB Western Digital - WD40NDZW-11MR8S1 external hard drive.  Her office’s hard drive has been used for many years, and she accidentally dropped it. After this event happened, the HDD did not work anymore. When it is connected to a computer, it has a clicking sound. Then, it disconnects and connects the hard drive several times, but it is still the same. The light of the hard drive still lit up, and she felt that the hard drive was vibrating. So, suspecting something was broken inside the hard drive. Even though she unplugs it and tries to shake it gently, it does not have any sound at all.

Hard Disk Drive Recovery

EHDR’s data recovery specialist checked through the hard drive, and it spun up successfully, and it is making a clicking sound. The clicking sound is due to the read/write heads being faulty, and it is unable to access the data sectors usually. Data recovery is still possible if the condition of the hard drive platters is not damaged or scratched by the faulty read/write heads. After confirming with the client, we proceed with the recovery.

Data Recovery Outcome

EHDR’s data recovery specialist managed to recover the data from her hard drive, it is clicking, but the faulty read/write heads did not damage the hard drive platters. We transferred the recovered data to a new hard drive for her. She checked through all the data and was happy with the recovery result.
