Dropped Hard Drive Not Working

Dropped Seagate External Hard Drive- Not Working

27 January 2022 – Seagate 1TB

Case description:

A customer contacted us to diagnose his Seagate 1TB ST1000LM035 2.5” portable hard drive. The hard drive has stopped working since early 2021. He accidentally dropped the hard drive and after that when he tried to access the hard drive again, it has a beeping sound, and his computer unable to detect the hard drive. He tried to change the cable and tried access on a different computer, but they are all the same. The beeping sound remains, and the drive still cannot be accessed. He has a lot of family photos and some working documents on the drive need to be recovered.

Action (Solution):

Singapore EHDR’s data recovery specialist proceeds with the diagnostic and found that the read/write head of the drive was faulty and stuck on the platters of the hard drive, causing the motor of the drive unable to spin up to the designated speed, that why it is having a beeping noise. Data recovery is still possible for the device if the condition of the platters is in good condition. After the confirmation, we proceed with the recovery and the data recovery was successful.

The Outcome

We transfer all the recovered data onto a new backup hard disk. He checked the data and was happy that all the data were recovered, and all the documents were readable.

Suggestion

If you have a faulty hard disk with a beeping noise, it will be better to disconnect the drive as soon as possible to prevent any further damage. If this situation is not handled properly and kept trying to access, it might scratch the platter’s surface and reduce the chances of recovery. Disconnect and contact a professional data recovery center for help.
