Case description:

A customer contacted us to recover data from an iPhone 11 (128GB). He accidentally dropped the iPhone into the sea, it took around 3 hours to recover the phone from the sea. iPhone 11 has a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes). By the time when the phone was retrieved, the iPhone was blank and power off. He tried to clean off the water and dry it with a hair dryer, after that he placed the phone in a container of uncooked rice to absorb all the moist. He did not try to charge the phone or power on the phone after that, he worried that it might causes further damage to the phone. He had a lot of photos, videos and WhatsApp data needs to be recovered.

Action (Solution):

EHDR’s data recovery specialist dissembles the device for assessment purpose. Water mark were found after we dissemble the phone, sea water has leaked into the phone. The PCB board are faulty, short circuit were found. However, if the crucial chips of the iPhone were not damaged, the data could be recoverable. After the confirmation with him, we proceed with the recovery, the recovery took around 2 weeks and we managed to recover the data from the iPhone.   

The Outcome

We contacted our customer for data checking, he was very happy that all his WhatsApp, photos and videos were recovered.

Suggestion

If you have a water damaged phone, do not the phone on or plug it in to a charger as water is conducive, which can overload the sensitive circuit and chip. Putting the phone in a container of uncooked rice or silica gel might help because it could help to absorb moisture, BUT not every cases.
