Case description:

A customer contacted us to diagnose for their NAS model QNAP - TS-831XU. They have 4 8TB Seagate hard drives ST8000VN0022 running in this QNAP. The first three drives were data drives with RAID 5 setup and the last drive was slotted in as a hot spare drive. Last week they noticed that the third hard drive lost connection, but they can still access the NAS, but it had become very slow, they checked and noticed that hard drive number 4, a hotspare drive, has started to rebuild, they suspect that hard drive number 3 faulty. The rebuild took a few hours and the estimated time needed is extended. They checked on the rebuild status and it shows no progression. Subsequently, the NAS became inaccessible. They tried to reboot but it’s remained the same. They took out the 4 hard drives and slotted into another QNAP NAS, it remain inaccessible.

Action (Solution):

EHDR’s data recovery specialist proceeds with the diagnostic and found that all the 4 hard drives are detectable and physically working, no hardware failure or errors. The RAID system is corrupted. The hotspare is not back up completely. Only some data were back up successfully, data recovery is possible in this case and after the confirmation with our client, EHDR’s data recovery specialist proceeds with cloning all the hard drives for data recovery purposes. Data recovery will be done on the cloned drive so that the original drive will not be affected if recovery failed.
