Samsung S9+ Submerge in Seawater

Samsung S9+ Submerge in Seawater

14 July 2022 – Samsung S9+

Case description:

A customer contacted us to recover data for her Samsung S9+. The phone stopped working early last month after it dropped into the sea. After retrieving it from the sea, the phone was blank and unable to power on. While the phone is in her hand, she notices some sea water leaking out from the side of the phone. So, she tried to dry it with a hairdryer and after that tried to turn on the phone, no sign of booting up at all. A few days later, the battery bloated, and she took it to some repair shops for checking. She hopes to recover her data but failed. Subsequently, she found our recovery center online and thought of giving it a try.

Action (Solution):

EHDR’s team dismantles the phone to verify the internal condition. Watermark was found in the phone and many components were corroded. Tried to measure the current of the chip, and a Short-circuit was found on the motherboard due to the seawater damage. Based on their experience, the main NAND flash chip might not be affected. Data recovery is possible if the crucial NAND flash chips are not damaged. Chip-off recovery method was confirmed and the whole recovery process took around one week.

The Outcome

The data recovery was successfully done, and our recovery specialist manage to recover all the data from this phone. We contacted her for data checking, she was very satisfied because all the data were recovered. All recovered data were transferred to an external hard disk for her.
