WD Mycloud NAS

WD Mycloud 4 bays NAS

Case description:

A customer came to EHDR to diagnose her company’s Western Digital Mycloud NAS (Network Attached Storage) with 3 units of 6TB WD 3.5” hard disk drive. The WD mycloud NAS was worked fine before two weeks ago, when they try to access the data on the NAS, it is inaccessible.  The lights are blinking, but unable to access the data in this device. They suspect it could be the hard drives failure as all three hard drive are more than 6 years old. The NAS was set up with RAID 5 system, which could endure 1 hard drive failure. As they are not familiar with the NAS device, they did not swap any of the hard drive themselves as they worry it might cause data loss.

Action (Solution):

We proceed with the diagnosis after the registration. Our data recovery specialist checked through all three hard drives and the WD Mycloud NAS device. EHDR team found that that neither all three hard drive nor NAS device facing any hardware level error. The main root cause for the NAS to become inaccessible is caused by the RAID system issue. The corrupted RAID system causes the data inaccessible.  After the confirmation service with our client, we proceed to clone all three hard drives for data recovery, we rebuilt the RAID system from the cloned drive and extract the data to hard drive.

The Outcome

Finally, the data recovery was successful, we managed to recover all the data this Mycloud WD NAS. Our client checked the data and confirmed that all the data are complete and fully recovered.
