If you have forgotten Windows 7 password, and can’t log on your computer, there is a simple solution that allows you to reset Windows 7 password, without having to buy or download any third-party software.
All you need the simple code command prompt code:
“net user <your_name> <your_new_password>”
However you are unable to call for command prompt at the start of your login page.
So to do this you will need to do the following steps:
- Boot Up using the Windows 7 OS DVD to copy the cmd file to sethc file (Sticky Keys)
- Boot Up to Windows 7, use the command prompt to change the password
- Change the sethc file to the default sethc file (Sticky Keys)
1) Boot Up using the Windows 7 OS DVD to copy the cmd file to sethc file
Firstly insert a Windows 7 OS DVD
Reboot the computer and boot from the installation CD
If your computer does not boot from the installation CD, you will need to set up to use the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device. To do this, reboot to the Bios to configure the boot up settings.
Once you have booted into the Windows 7 OS DVD, click “Repair Your Computer”
You will see various options as shown in the image below, click Command Prompt
Now that you are in the command prompt, these two steps will allow you to copy the cmd file to sethc file (Sticky Keys)
First Type: “copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\”
Next Type: “copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe”
Now eject the DVD and reboot the PC
2) Boot Up to Windows 7, use the command prompt to change the password
Once you are in the login screen, press shift 5 times and the Command Prompt screen will appear
Now type: “net user <your_name> <your_new_password>”; Where <your_name> is the user account, and e.g. <your_new_password> is the new password you want to reset.
E.g. User Account: admin; New Password: P@$$w0rd
net user admin P@$$w0rd
Now you should be able to login
3) Change the sethc file back to the default sethc file (Sticky Keys)
Now that we can log in we need to change the sethc file back to the default sethc file
Firstly insert a Windows 7 OS DVD
Reboot the computer and boot from the installation CD
Once you have booted into the Windows 7 OS DVD, click “Repair Your Computer”
Click Command Prompt
First Type: “copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\”
Next Type: “copy /y c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe”
Now you have restored the default sticky key shortcut
