Awareness of Data Confidentiality and Information Leakage- Degaussing
What do you know about data confidential data? Or to what extent does your employee aware of the confidentiality of the data? In this modern age, awareness of data confidentiality is increased, regardless of the country or organization. Data leaks are a major threat to everyone in the world. In terms of organization, data must be protected. Because, any data leak, could implicate or involve many other parties. In Singapore, according to the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), the financial penalty for data violations will be applied accordingly. As a result, certain organizations often spend millions of dollars on data protection.
Many ways lead to data leakages such as unpatched security vulnerabilities, malware, insider misuse, or human error. How can we make sure the data is not exposed to other parties? Nowadays, we started to keep our data on the hard drive, thumb drive, mobile device or SSD. But when it comes to the time which we need to dispose the drive, will it be safe to dispose the storage normally? Or how should we delete or erase all the files before we dispose of the storage? What can we do to remove all the data?
The answer is Degaussing. Degaussing is a solution to permanently destroy the data on magnetic media such as hard drive, floppy disk, magnetic tape, etc. This process will reduce the magnetization of the storage by applying reverse magnetic force. Magnetic media which goes through this process is not reusable and all data stored in that device will be destroyed completely.
